from august 8 to august 21, 2024, a remarkable global scientific excursion focusing on ecological protection and water security was held, hosted by nanjing university. this 14-day event also involved four other universities: hohai university, china university of geosciences (wuhan), ningxia university, and north china university of water resources and electric power. the excursion covered key locations including the taihu lake basin, adelaide plains, lower murray-darling basin, and limestone coast.
under the guidance of professor yueqing xie from the school of earth sciences and engineering at nanjing university, the team conducted field investigations in various sites such as murray bridge, mount gambier, naracoorte caves, st kilda mangrove trail, oaklands park wetlands, and the south australia botanic garden. they also participated in seminars and experiments at the university of south australia, flinders university, and the university of adelaide. the activities were diverse and comprehensive, encompassing surface water, groundwater, water resource management, the ecological significance of water resources, plant water utilization, and ecological protection. faculty and students from all five universities collaborated effectively, engaging in scientific training on a range of research topics.
the event proceeded smoothly and it provided students with invaluable opportunities to study water science in real-world contexts and to expand their international perspectives. additionally, the excursion established a strong foundation for future international cooperation and exchange in the field of water science. it is anticipated that this initiative will lead to more international collaboration projects in the future, contributing significantly to global water resource security and environmental protection.
